This weekend, I joined Rotary Salamanca to collect donations for Hope in a Suitcase outside BigW in Kingston. The initiative provides children entering foster care or out-of-home care with a suitcase filled with essential new items to call their own, helping them feel loved, valued, and supported by our community.
The goal is to give each child something of their own, a message that they are valued and supported by our community. Hope in a Suitcase is run entirely by volunteers and community donations, and aims to replace the distressing experience of arriving in care with a plastic bag by giving every child a suitcase packed with things like toiletries, clothing, books, toys, and other age-appropriate essentials that help encourage self-care and creativity.
