As Dark Mofo returns to Hobart, so too does one of the festival’s most recognisable traditions – Paint the Town Red.
From glowing shopfronts and illuminated landmarks to themed displays and creative installations, the campaign encourages businesses, residents and community groups to embrace the festival atmosphere and help transform southern Tasmania into a sea of red. This year’s campaign runs from 8–22 June and, for the first time, households are also being encouraged to take part by lighting up their homes.

What makes Paint the Town Red special is that it extends the energy of Dark Mofo well beyond the official festival venues. It creates a city-wide experience that welcomes visitors while giving locals a chance to be part of something uniquely Tasmanian. Whether it’s a red light in a shop window, a themed menu, public art or a striking building display, every contribution adds to the atmosphere.
Events like Dark Mofo bring significant economic and cultural benefits to Hobart during what would otherwise be a quieter winter period. Paint the Town Red helps spread those benefits throughout the community by encouraging participation from businesses, households and visitors alike.
As Hobart embraces another winter festival season, Paint the Town Red is a reminder that some of the best parts of our city happen when the community gets involved. Sometimes all it takes is a splash of colour to turn winter into something worth celebrating.
