Growing Demand Highlights Need for Better Mountain Access
Each winter, thousands of people head to kunanyi / Mount Wellington to experience snow just minutes from Hobart’s CBD. With limited parking available and increasing visitor numbers, the City of Hobart is taking steps to address illegal parking and ensure emergency vehicles can access the mountain when needed.
Public safety must come first, particularly during busy snow days when conditions can change quickly. However, the growing demand to visit kunanyi also highlights a bigger issue.
Whether it’s a cable car, improved shuttle services or better traffic management, we need to ensure people can continue to enjoy kunanyi while maintaining public safety and respecting the mountain environment.
The much discussed redevelopment of The Springs should also be a priority. As more people visit kunanyi each year, we need to invest in the facilities and infrastructure needed to support that growth and improve the visitor experience. Kunanyi is one of Hobart’s greatest natural attractions.
As visitation continues to grow, we need practical solutions that balance access, safety and environmental stewardship, ensuring future generations can continue to enjoy the mountain.
