The confirmation that Macquarie Point Stadium is unlikely to host AFL games until 2031 reflects the reality of delivering infrastructure projects of this scale and complexity. Projects of this size require careful planning, engineering and delivery, and delays between construction completion and operational readiness are not unusual.
The priority should not be whether it opens earlier, but that it is completed properly and ready to perform as intended. Rushing a project of this size rarely ends well and ensuring it is fully operational from day one will ultimately matter far more than meeting an ambitious date.
The real measure of success will not simply be AFL matches, but whether the stadium delivers as a genuinely multi-purpose venue that attracts major events, supports tourism and generates economic activity throughout the year. Its value will come from how well it integrates into Hobart’s broader event, business and visitor economy.
With construction underway, the focus should now be on outcomes, not just timelines. The real measure will be the lasting value this once-in-a-generation investment delivers for Tasmania’s economy, community and future opportunities.
