The Macquarie Point precinct master plan is now public after much anticipation, and it shows this is far more than a stadium proposal.
What stands out is the scale and ambition of the vision. This is not just about one piece of infrastructure, but the opportunity to create a genuine waterfront precinct with housing, public spaces, hospitality and year-round activity that adds real life and energy to Hobart.
Opportunities like this do not come along often. A project of this size has the potential to bring more people into the city, support local businesses, encourage further investment and help create a part of Hobart that works every day, not just during major events.
That is why the focus now needs to be on delivering the full vision. Housing, access, public amenity and real day-to-day activity all need to be part of the project from the beginning if this is to become a true city-building outcome.
Macquarie Point should not be seen only as an events destination. Done properly, it has the potential to become a vibrant and well-used part of Hobart that strengthens the city socially, economically and culturally for decades to come.
