A proposal to demolish the Prince of Wales Hotel in Battery Point and replace it with a mixed-use residential and commercial complex has been formally lodged with the Hobart City Council.
The application seeks permission to remove the existing building at 55 Hampden Road while retaining the historic cottage at 43 South Street, excluding a small lean-to at the rear, which would be demolished. In its place, the development would deliver 13 apartments, four townhouses, visitor accommodation, a cafe, retail tenancies, and a basement car park, complemented by landscaped communal areas and pedestrian-friendly pathways.

The Prince of Wales Hotel was first constructed in 1843 and rebuilt in 1967 as a red-brick structure, serving for decades as both a community gathering spot and a local hospitality venue.
Its current owners; INCAT managing director Craig Clifford, Pure Foods Tasmania chief executive Michael Cooper, Tasmanian Shipping Supplies head Richard Fader, and Wilkins Construction director Rob Wilkins—say the redevelopment will “breathe new life” into the historic Battery Point village while respecting the suburb’s character”.
“Our goal is to create a vibrant new residential community in the heart of Battery Point that complements existing dwellings and provides modern, high-quality living spaces in one of Hobart’s most sought-after locations,” the developers said in a joint statement.
