New Hotel Proposal Boosts CBD Vision

Hanging Garden expansion to bring new life to the CBD

DarkLab’s proposal for a 150-room designer hotel linked to the Hanging Garden precinct by an underground tunnel is an exciting vision for Hobart’s future.

Along with the broader redevelopment plans for the precinct, the project has the potential to bring more visitors into the city, create jobs, support local businesses and further strengthen Hobart’s growing reputation as a destination for arts, culture, hospitality and entertainment.

The success of the Hanging Garden, Altar and the Odeon has already demonstrated the demand for unique and vibrant spaces in Hobart. Building on that success with additional accommodation, hospitality venues and entertainment offerings could help attract new investment while encouraging more people to spend time in the city.

Projects like this also help activate underutilised parts of the CBD, creating more reasons for locals and visitors to explore different areas of the city and contributing to a safer and more vibrant atmosphere, particularly after dark.

There is still a planning process ahead and any proposal should be carefully assessed on its merits. However, it is encouraging to see ambitious ideas being put forward that seek to enhance Hobart’s economy, support our tourism industry and add to the experiences our city can offer.

A vibrant city doesn’t happen by accident. It requires people willing to invest, innovate and create opportunities. Proposals like this are an important part of the conversation about Hobart’s future and the kind of city we want to become.
